Bhubaneswar: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday warned of strict action against educational institution which will be found neglecting in adhering to the COVID guidelines prescribed by the state government.

Reviewing the COVID situation in the state, Naveen said children remain the most vulnerable section of the society as they have not been covered under vaccination drive. Hence, it is the responsibility of everybody to remain alert towards their protection from the disease.

He directed for formation of a special team to conduct surprise inspection of schools, colleges, universities, technical institutes and other educational institutions. If it finds any institution neglecting in following the COVID guidelines, the team should take strict actions.

He also told the officials to keep a close watch on markets, religious places and health institutions where public gathering is expected. He directed regular COVID test of high risk groups like health workers, pregnant women, school students, police personnel and government officials.

Stating that the disease has been found to be spreading among the health workers, the chief minister directed to promote awareness among those of government and private institutions going for collection of samples for COVID test. Since Delta variant of the virus has been detected in the patients, he instructed to set up micro containment zones.

Since the festival season is ahead, Naveen appealed to the people to remain cautious and follow the COVID norms like wearing masks and maintaining social distance in public places to prevent the third wave of the pandemic taking acute form.

Sounding a caution in this regard, he said the government has relaxed the restrictions keeping the people’s interest. But, it may resort to lockdown, if situation warrants, he added.

Chief secretary Suresh Chandra Mahapatra, additional chief secretary, Health department PK Mohapatra, DGP Abhay, municipal commissioners of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, and Puri collector spoke on the COVID measures in their respective areas. Secretaries of different departments were present. Secretary to chief minister (5T) VK Pandian coordinated the meeting.
