VSSUT Student Arrested For ‘Assaulting’ Female Classmate In Odisha’s Burla

Bhubaneswar: Police arrested a final-year BTech student of Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT), Burla, late last night for allegedly physically assaulting a female classmate at his rented accommodation.

The complaint, filed at Burla police station, stated that the accused not only beat the victim on Tuesday but also subjected her to mental torture, blackmail and tried to extort money from her. Both the accused and the victim are final-year students o

f the same university.

Acting on the FIR, police took the student into custody, produced him in court, and sent him to judicial custody after his bail application was rejected. He has now been lodged in Sambalpur Circle Jail.

Confirming the incident, VSSUT vice-chairperson Dipak Kumar Sahoo said that they had received a written complaint from the student and her father and the allegation was physically verified by the warden. “Prima facie, we feel that there has been some kind of violence. The accused was earlier shunted out of the hostel for indiscipline and was staying in a rented accommodation. The incident also took place outside the campus,” he said.

Sahoo further stated that the accused student has been barred from entering the campus without permission and the case has been referred to the university’s Internal Complaints Committee for a detailed probe.
