Mumbai: Was Azizul Nizanul Rahman (29) involved in the communal violence that erupted in Nagpur on March 17?
Rahman is an illegal Bangladeshi immigrant, arrested from Dadar in Mumbai recently. He had been staying at Hasanbaug in Nagpur, but moved to Mumbai after the violence.
The Mumbai Crime Branch is now tracking his mobile tower location during the violence to find out if he was involved. More than 110 people, including suspected mastermind Fahim Khan, have already been arrested in the matter so far.
Meanwhile, the police are worried about groups of illegal Bangladeshis living in India as eunuchs. Six illegal Bangladeshis were picked up from the Jahangirpuri area in Delhi recently for dressing up as eunuchs and begging near the metro station.
“These people had undergone minor surgeries and were taking some hormones to change their appearances. They used the banned IMO app on their phones to keep in touch with their families back in Bangladesh,” a police official said.
Authorities believe that the Bangladeshis have started dressing up as eunuchs after realising the legal complexities involved in dealing with such people. Unless they get involved in any major crime, the police normally give eunuchs a wide berth.
Even in the case of Delhi, the Bangladeshis were operating in the area for months before an anonymous source tipped off the Foreign Cell of the Delhi Police. Only after carrying out surveillance for 10 days, did the police round up the six.
“Eunuchs earn quite a lot at all metro cities in India by begging at traffic signals. Things will get difficult, now that illegal Bangladeshi immigrants have started doing the same. It is very difficult to take action against eunuchs or even ascertain whether someone is a eunuch or not,” another official said.
