Bhubaneswar: After harrowing 43 hours, trekker R Babu trapped in a steep gorge in Malampuzha mountains in Palakkad, Kerala, was rescued by teams of the Indian Army on Wednesday.
Dressed in T-shirt and shorts, the 23-year-old youth was seen pictured with smiling army personnel. He is a native of Cherad in Malampuzha.
Teams of the Indian Army were mobilised overnight to bring the trekker back to safety. “One team of 12 personnel from Madras Regiment Centre, Wellington, consisting of mountain qualified personnel with specialist equipment reached by road at the location at early hours on Wednesday,” Army sources told the news agency ANI.
The second team of 22 personnel from the Parachute Regiment centre, Bangalore, was also moved by aircraft to Sulur and reached the spot by 4 am.
Babu slipped and was trapped between two rocks while climbing Cherad Hill along with two friends on Monday. He was seen precariously balancing himself in a small crack.
