New Delhi: A video showing passengers aboard a luxury cruise ship witnessing massive 40-foot waves battering the vessel has gone viral. The vessel was navigating the notoriously rough waters of the Drake Passage, a 600-mile-wide stretch between Antarctica and the southern tip of South America, when the passengers reportedly had the terrible experience.
The scary moment was captured in a video that was shared on Instagram by travel blogger Lesley Anne Murphy. The blogger described it as a “48-hour rollercoaster”.

The video shows how the 342-foot ship struggles against the relentless waves. It is a common occurrence in the Drake Passage due to the convergence of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Southern Oceans, according to the Quark Expeditions.

Passengers who panicked, as seen in the video, were seen recording the moment. The towering waves were visible through the ship’s massive windows. These waves rocked the vessel, which kept swaying dramatically.
“I am proud to say we survived not one but two Drake Shakes on @limitlestravel Antarctica! For context, the Drake Passage is the body of water between the tip of Argentina and Antarctica. It’s infamous for its extremely rough seas. If you’re lucky, you get the Drake Lake. If you’re like us, you get the Drake Shake with 35 ft waves,” Murphy wrote on the caption to his Instagram post.
The blogger claimed all were safe despite the ‘insane’ experience.
