Hyderabad: A massive fire at a residential building led to several casualties and damage here on Monday.
At least nine people lost their lives and five others were injured after the fire broke out at a chemical godown on the first floor of a four-storeyed building at Bazarghat in Hyderabad’s Nampally area, reported Hindustan Times.
In a daring rescue operation carried out by Fire Brigade personnel and local people, a woman and child were taken out through a small window to save them from the blazing fire.

Hyderabad’s Central Zone DCP Venkateshwar Rao said the blaze was caused at around 9.30 am by a spark while repairing a car in the stilt floor, where several drums with chemical were also stored.
“Repair work of a car was going on in the godown on ground floor. The sparks spread to the chemical barrel kept in the godown and caused the fire. It was an inflammable chemical stored in fibre-plastic manufacturing. Within no time, the fire engulfed other floors of the building and caused six deaths,” the DCP said earlier in the day.
The car was badly damaged in the raging flames.

The actual toll could be higher, according to eyewitnesses who were involved in rescue operations along with two National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams.
“We brought the fire under control within an hour and rescued 21 persons trapped in the building and rushed them to Osmania General Hospital,” the DCP informed.
Ten of the rescued persons were in an unconscious state.
