Baripada: The forest department officials on Saturday rescued an elephant calf from an abandoned well at Bisusole village under Deuli Range in Baripada Forest Division of Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district.
According to sources, the calf was part of an elephant herd from Jharkhand that had strayed into the village from the dense forest on the West Bengal border.
On being informed, forest officials from Deuli Range along with fire personnel rushed to the spot. It took them hours to get the elephant calf out of the very narrow well. An earthmover was used in the rescue operation.
Baripada DFO Santosh Kumar Joshi informed that the calf has now reunited with the herd. The field staff have been instructed to close such abandoned wells, he added.
