New Delhi: Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled to the Maldives where he was received by government representatives at the airport.
Massive protests continued in Colombo. Thousands of protesters took to the streets demanding Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s immediate resignation.
Security forces used teargas shells and water cannons to disperse the crowd when they tried to enter Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s home, NDTV reported.
Meanwhile, President Rajapaksa, his wife and bodyguards were driven to an undisclosed location under police escort, an airport official in Male said, News18 reported.
The Speaker of Sri Lanka’s Parliament said he hasn’t received Rajapaksa’s resignation yet.
