This is his second consecutive term in the Upper House and and his tenure will continue till April 2026.
In September, Sujeet resigned from the Rajya Sabha membership as a BJD MP and later joined the BJP, forcing a by-election for the vacant seat. The BJP nominated him for the bypoll, which he won unopposed.
Had there been a contest, Sujeet, a lawyer and social entrepreneur, would have anyhow got elected given the BJP’s numerical strength of 78 MLAs in 147-member Vidhan Sabha in Odisha.
He was another strategic political acquisition for the BJP from the opposition party after Mamata Mohanta, whom the saffron party sent to Rajya Sabha following her resignation as a BJD member of the Upper House.
The exit of Mamata and Sujeet has brought down the BJD’s strength in the Upper Houser to seven after the regional party drew a blank in the recent Lok Sabha polls.
