Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s mangrove restoration efforts have earned international recognition with a documentary series, hosted by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Goodwill Ambassador and actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, best known for his role as Jaime Lannister in the TV series Game of Thrones.
The mangrove restoration story, highlighting community-driven climate action, featured in the second season of Bloomberg Originals’ ‘An Optimist’s Guide to the Planet’.
The new season, which premiered on October 23, includes a segment on the mangrove restoration efforts under the Enhancing Climate Resilience of India’s Coastal Communities (ECRICC) project. The initiative is a collaborative effort of the Green Climate Fund, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), and Odisha’s Department of Forest, Environment and Climate Change, supported by the UNDP. It aims to address the impacts of climate change on vulnerable coastal regions.
The first episode, titled ‘Protect’, Coster-Waldau to Bagapatia village in Kendrapada, about 12 km from the coast, where 719 families recently relocated having suffered from Super Cyclone and rising sea levels and had to start a new life with their villages destroyed by coastal erosion. The episode captures how local communities, especially women, are actively restoring mangroves, which serves as a natural barrier against coastal hazards, to secure their future.
It showcases Odisha as a model of grassroots action against climate challenges, emphasising how community involvement can lead to impactful environmental change.
