Delhi: A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on Friday at 11:50 am IST, sending strong tremors across the region, including Bangkok, Thailand.

As per media reports, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the epicenter was 16 km north-northwest of Sagaing, a town in central Myanmar.

The initial quake was followed by a 6.4-magnitude aftershock, intensifying the impact. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km, which typically results in more severe ground shaking, increasing the risk of damage and casualties.

Impact and Casualties

While official reports on damage and casualties from Myanmar remain scarce due to the military junta’s tight control over information, Reuters shared visuals from Bangkok, confirming casualties among construction workers.

As per the media reports, local police stated that an under-construction building collapsed, leaving at least 43 people missing.

Reports have also surfaced on social media suggesting that the historic Ava Bridge (Inwa Bridge) over the Irrawaddy River has collapsed. Built in the 1930s by the British, the bridge is a crucial infrastructure link in Myanmar.

Early reports indicate extensive damage throughout #Myanmar caused by massive earthquake around 12 pm local time.

In Bangkok, a city with over 17 million residents, witnesses described high-rise buildings swaying, causing panic among locals. Hundreds of people rushed onto the streets, while Sky News reported that water splashed out of swimming pools due to the force of the tremors.

However, authorities in Myanmar and Thailand are currently assessing the extent of the damage. Seismologists have warned of possible aftershocks, urging residents, especially those in high-rise structures, to remain cautious.
