Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik congratulated the Indian men’s hockey team for winning gold medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games and announced cash award of Rs 5 lakh for every player in the squad and support staff.
India outplayed defending champions Japan 5-1 in the final on Friday, thus booking an automatic berth in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Naveen spoke to the Indian team, including skipper Harmanpreet Singh and Odisha’s very own Amit Rohidas, over a video call after the medal ceremony, much to the delight of the players.
“My heartiest congratulations to the victorious Indian men’s hockey team. Their unwavering dedication and hard work have once again proven that hockey is truly India’s game, embodying our nation’s unyielding spirit. In Odisha, where hockey holds a special place in our hearts, this historic day will forever be etched in our memories as a momentous triumph for our beloved sport and our nation. I wish the Indian team the very best as they prepare for the Paris Olympic Games next year,” Naveen said.
Secretary to CM (5T) V K Pandian lauded the Indian team and said they played like champions throughout the tournament and deserved the gold medal.
Sports Secretary Vineel Krishna also congratulated the Indian team.
Odisha is the sponsor of Indian hockey teams since 2018 and has been supporting the teams in major tournaments including two World Cups held on Odisha soil.
