The mishap took place when the Beechcraft Model 390 (Premier 1) aircraft was attempting to land near Elmina township.
The plane had lost contact with air traffic control tower before the crash. There was no emergency call, but the plane had been given clearance to land.
The plane had taken off from Langkawi island, a popular tourist destination, and was en route to Selangor’s Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah airport, near Kuala Lumpur.
Among those killed was a state assembly lawmaker from central Pahang state, who was in charge of housing and environment.
Mohamad Syahmie Mohamad Hashim, a former member of Malaysian air force, said he saw the plane flying erratically.
“Not long after that I heard a loud boom,” he told AFP.
