Texas: In a major setback, a SpaceX Starship rocket broke up in space minutes after launching from Texas on Thursday, reported Reuters. This forced flights over the Gulf of Mexico to divert from their course to avoid falling debris. The explosion has come as a major setback to Elon Musk’s flagship rocket program.

The SpaceX mission control reportedly lost contact with the newly upgraded Starship, carrying its first test payload of mock satellites. There was no crew. It exploded eight minutes after liftoff from its South Texas rocket facilities at 5:38 p.m. EST (2238 GMT).

While the mission ended with the upper stage vehicle exploding over the Atlantic Ocean, SpaceX successfully caught the first-stage Super Heavy booster using its “chopstick” arms, marking another milestone in the company’s ambitious rocket development program.

Launch Details

At precisely 4:37 pm (2237 GMT), SpaceX’s Starship rocket, in its taller and more powerful configuration, blasted off from Boca Chica. The test marked an important step in the development of the Starship program, which is designed to be the largest and most powerful rocket ever built.

Successful Booster Catch

Seven minutes into the flight, the Super Heavy booster decelerated from supersonic speeds and began its descent back to Earth. This maneuver was eagerly anticipated, as it had been successfully executed previously in October 2024, but not in November, when the booster was instead brought down in a controlled splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico. This time, however, the booster descended smoothly and was caught by the “chopstick” arms of the launch tower, a unique and highly technical feat. This moment of success was met with applause from the SpaceX ground control team and was considered a major achievement in reusable rocket technology.

The Upper Stage Anomaly

Shortly after the successful booster catch, however, disaster struck. SpaceX lost contact with the upper stage of the Starship rocket, and within moments, the company confirmed that the vehicle had undergone “rapid unscheduled disassembly”—a euphemism for an explosion. The explosion occurred during atmospheric re-entry, and dramatic footage shared on social media platforms, including X (formerly Twitter), showed the spacecraft breaking apart in a fiery cascade over the Atlantic.

Public Reaction and Ongoing Investigation

As the upper stage exploded, FlightAware trackers showed multiple aircraft altering their course near the Turks and Caicos Islands. Social media posts highlighted the catastrophic disintegration of the spacecraft, which generated both concern and excitement among SpaceX enthusiasts and observers.

“Success is uncertain, but entertainment is guaranteed!” along with one of the clips of the upper stage explosion. This statement underscored the company’s culture of embracing both successes and setbacks as part of its broader mission to revolutionize space travel,” Elon Musk, SpaceX’s CEO, wrote on X.

According to reports, a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) spokesperson has confirmed that the agency was aware of the anomaly and was assessing the situation. The FAA further indicated that an updated statement would be issued in due course regarding the investigation, reported the NDTV.

The Way Ahead

While the failure of the upper stage vehicle in this Starship test mission represents a setback, SpaceX’s successful booster catch demonstrated the company’s ongoing advancements in rocket recovery technology. The incident highlights the inherent risks and challenges in developing new space technologies but also underscores SpaceX’s ability to bounce back and learn from its trials. As the company continues to refine its Starship program, further tests will be required to overcome such anomalies and reach its ambitious goals for space exploration.
