Bhubaneswar: Inconsolable and devastated by her daughter’s death, software engineer Sweta Utkal Kumari’s mother has appealed to the Odisha government to ensure Sweta’s boyfriend Soumyajit Mohapatra is given the punishment he deserves.
In a video which is circulating on social media, Sweta’s mother is inconsolable. Blaming Soumyajit for driving her daughter to death, she urged the state government to ensure that he gets the strictest punishment.
Police have registered a case against Soumyajeet under IPC Section 306 (offence of abetment to suicide) on the basis of the complaint lodged by Sweta’s father.
CDR records have revealed that Sweta had made 15 phone calls to Soumyajit an hour before she allegedly ended her life in a rented apartment in Bhubaneswar. Soumyajit, however, did not take her calls, according to media reports.
Notably, Sweta’s father had told the media that he had visited Soumyajeet’s place twice and his mother had demanded Rs 30 lakh for their wedding.
Sweta and Soumyajeet met in 2018 while working with an IT major in Bhubaneswar. “It was a one-sided love affair and Soumyajeet threatened to end his life if my sister did not reciprocate. This is how the relationship started. We came to know about it after one and a half years. Trouble started about a year ago,” the deceased’s brother said.
According to Sweta’s brother, Soumyajeet was torturing her physically and mentally. “He started blackmailing Sweta threatening to make their intimate pictures and videos viral,” he added.
After quitting his job to pursue MBA, he started “extorting” money from Sweta, they alleged, demanding a detailed probe and strict action against him.
Soumyajeet works in a private company in the capital city while Sweta was a Technology Analyst with Infosys.
