Washington: The United States on Saturday launched airstrikes in Yemen, killing at least 31 in an attempt to target Iran-backed Houthi rebels, according to reports.

The US Central Command took to social media and shared images of fighters taking off in an aircraft carrier. The images also showed a bomb destroying a building compound in Yemen.

“On March 15, US Central Command initiated a series of operations consisting of precision strikes against Iran-backed Houthi targets across Yemen to defend American interests, deter enemies, and restore freedom of navigation,” the US Central Command wrote on social media.

“Hell will rain down upon you….”

US President Donald Trump also took to Truth Social to announce the military operation against Houthi rebels. He warned Iran to cut ties with the rebel group.

“To all Houthi terrorists, YOUR TIME IS UP, AND YOUR ATTACKS MUST STOP, STARTING TODAY. IF THEY DON’T, HELL WILL RAIN DOWN UPON YOU LIKE NOTHING YOU HAVE EVER SEEN BEFORE!” Trump posted on Truth Social platform.

“Support for the Houthi terrorists must end IMMEDIATELY! Do NOT threaten the American People, their President, who has received one of the largest mandates in Presidential History, or Worldwide shipping lanes. If you do, BEWARE, because America will hold you fully accountable and, we won’t be nice about it!,” he added while addressing Iran.

Yemen confirms the casualties, Houthis reacts

Meanwhile, the Yemen health ministry confirmed the death of 20 people. At least nine others were reportedly injured. They condemned the strikes and dubbed the action as a “US-British aggression” and “criminal brutality.” The Houthis have vowed that that strikes “will not pass without response.” They released a statement on the Al-Masirah TV station. “Our Yemeni armed forces are fully prepared to confront escalation with escalation,” they said, as quoted by Hindustan Times.

Last Tuesday, the Houthis had announced their intentions to resume their campaign to obstruct shipping in the Red Sea until Israel lifted its blockade of aid to Palestinians.

US, an ally of Israel, reclassified the Houthis as a “foreign terrorist organisation” earlier this month.
