Bhubaneswar: The BJP rally at Lower PMG in Bhubaneswar turned violent on Thursday as the protesters clashed with police, damaged police vehicles and threw stones at them.
According to sources, hundreds of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) activists marched towards Odisha Assembly from party’s state headquarters, demanding the resignation of Minister of State for Home Dibya Shankar Mishra over his alleged complicity in Mamita Meher case.
The clash erupted when police stopped them from scaling the barricades at the Lower PMG and foiled their plans to gherao the assembly. A few cops and a journalist were injured. Following which, police had to use batons to disperse the BJYM activists, who went on the rampage vandalising police vehicles at the spot and hurling stones.
The agitators were later taken into preventive custody.
Meanwhile, Twin City Commissioner of Police Saumendra Priyadarshi has condemned the attack on police personnel. He said that more than 15 personnel of various ranks were injured, eight vehicles were vandalised and a driver was assaulted during the violent clash.
Action will be taken as per law, he added.
