Mumbai: Krishnakumar Kunnath, known to the world as KK, sang over 700 songs in different languages before his voice was silenced for good on Tuesday night.
What was his last recorded song?
According to director Srijit Mukherjee, KK sang a ‘very special’ Gulzar-penned song for his upcoming film ‘Sherdil: The Pilibit Saga’ in April.
“The song is very special. It’s written by Gulzar saab and sung by KK. And it is possibly going to be his last song for a film at least,” Srijit told IndiaToday.in.
KK, an artist in high demand, felt unwell after a stage performance in Kolkata on Tuesday evening – his second in two days at the same venue Nazrul Manch – and returned to his hotel. He reportedly fell down in his hotel room and was rushed to CMRI Hospital, where he was declared brought dead.
Though he was an admirer of KK’s singing, Srijit met him for the first time in April after convincing him to sing a track for his film starring Pankaj Tripathi, Neeraj Kabi and Sayani Gupta.
“Gulzar saab is so fond of him and that collaboration has come out so well… I am dying to release and share the song. It will be out soon,” said Srijit.
Even KK had shared pictures of his first meeting with filmmaker Srijit Mukherji along with Gulzar on social media in April.
After KK’s shocking death, Srijit shared a video of KK from a recording studio as he sings Gulzar’s composition ‘Chhor Aaye Hum’ from the 1996 film Maachis. Watch it here:
Recalling his first meeting with KK, Srijit said he told the singer how his voice saw a lot of ups and downs in the filmmaker’s life.
“It’s unbelievable still. You don’t measure an artiste by the songs. You measure him by the impact of his songs. Today, almost every message on my timeline is about KK. The last time it happened was when Irrfan passed away. That’s how artistes touch your life,” India Today quoted Srijit as saying.
