Delhi: A detailed probe into the recent death of three people in Delhi’s Peeragarhi has led the police to a self-styled godman, named Kamruddin, who fed them poison-laced laddoos after promising them immense wealth.
Kamruddin, originally from Uttar Pradesh’s Firozabad, has been arrested. Further investigation revealed that he had killed four others in the past, as reported by NDTV.
The bodies of Randhir (76), Shiv Naresh Singh (47) and Laxmi Devi (40), were found inside an old SUV recently. The police suspected a suicide pact after post mortem revealed they had consumed poison.
However, after the family members of the three denied any suicide angle, the police began a thorough investigation that included checking CCTV footage. The police said technical surveillance and call detail record analysis revealed that all three were in contact with Kamruddin in the days leading up to the incident and had visited Loni in Ghaziabad – first on the day before the incident, and then again on the day they were found dead.
The police found that one more person was in the car when the three were returning to Delhi; that person was Kamaruddin. The police are checking if more people were involved in the crime.
“He was arrested following a detailed technical and field investigation. He was involved in a well-planned conspiracy to eliminate the victims and rob them of cash and valuables,” Sachin Sharma, DCP (Outer) said.
During questioning, Kamruddin said that he fed the three people poison-laced laddoos in the name of performing a ritual. He had promised them a massive gain in wealth and received money from them.
He told the two men that he would need a woman with long hair to perform the ritual that would make them rich. That is how Laxmi came into the picture.
Kamaruddin also took pleasure in making the victims feel hopeless, the police said. He told Laxmi that she would not get anything as her hand had some cuts, which would make her ineligible to receive the divine windfall.
After extracting a lot of money from his victims for performing the rituals, he realised that he would have to get rid of them. He then offered them the laddoos, laced with sleeping pills and other chemicals.
A further probe is underway to know more about Kamruddin’s activities.
