Kolkata: After per party’s poll debacle, Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee on Friday asked party leaders and workers to rebuild the organisation. She was clear that those unhappy within the party were free to leave.
Addressing a meeting of TMC candidates and leaders at her Kalighat residence in Kolkata, attended by party national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, Mamata struck a defiant tone despite the party’s loss of power in Bengal after 15 years, reported India Today. According to reports, she told party workers that anyone wanting to quit the Trinamool Congress could “go ahead”, while those staying back should focus on rebuilding the organisation.
The remarks come amid visible signs of unease within the party following the BJP’s sweeping victory in the state elections and the defeat of several senior TMC leaders, including Mamata herself.
Reports said Mamata instructed party leaders to revive booth-level networks, restore vandalised party offices and submit area-wise organisational reports within a week. She reportedly said she was prepared to personally oversee the repainting and restoration of damaged TMC offices if needed.
Some defeated candidates were absent from the Kalighat meeting.
After ruling West Bengal since 2011, the TMC suffered its worst electoral setback in years in the 2026 Assembly polls, with the BJP forming the government under Suvendu Adhikari. Mamata has since alleged electoral irregularities. She had called for opposition unity against the BJP.
