Washington, DC: With the Republicans suffering setbacks in the 2026 US midterm elections, Elon Musk has taken to sarcasm to express his indignation.
Musk, the world’s richest person, poured nearly half a billion dollars into backing Republican candidates and political groups during the election cycle.
He has now taken to X with two cryptic, sarcastic posts about space, prompting questions about his massive political investment and its outcome.
“Data centers in space looking pretty appealing right now,” Musk wrote in one of his posts.
“Guess my election-interfering space lasers didn’t work this time,” he wrote in another, in apparent reference to his political involvement and the criticism surrounding his role in the elections.
Musk’s reaction came against the backdrop of a major Republican setback in the midterm elections, in which Democrats registered significant victories.
Musk spent nearly $474 million on political contributions during the 2026 election cycle, making him the biggest election-cycle donor apart from wealthy candidates who finance their own campaigns, as per an analysis by The New York Times,
The estimate covers disclosed donations to federal and state political groups from January 1, 2025. The amount is almost half a billion dollars and represents an extraordinary financial commitment to Republican political efforts.
A significant portion of the money went to America PAC, Musk’s own political action committee, which received approximately $216 million. The group funded an extensive field operation across the country.
Another $168 million went to the Senate Leadership Fund, the principal super PAC supporting Senate Republicans.
Almost all of this contribution effectively went towards supporting Republican nominee Ken Paxton in Texas, the report suggests.
Nearly $30 million was contributed by Musk to the Congressional Leadership Fund, which backs House Republicans. Another $44 million or so went to other Republican candidates and federal political groups.
In addition to this, about $16 million went towards state-level political efforts in Michigan, Texas and Wisconsin.
The Democrats have won control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, according to election results reported by The Washington Post.
This marks a significant reversal in Washington’s political balance.
The election outcome could make the political and regulatory environment more challenging for Musk. Democrats have previously signalled that they intend to scrutinise several aspects of his business and government dealings if they regain control of Congress.
