Bhubaneswar: A woman was allegedly assaulted, tortured and branded with a hot iron by her in-laws at Kalyani village under Dhamnagar police limits in Odisha’s Bhadrak district.
The victim has been identified as Pranati Das (32) of Dihudi Sahi-Kanikapada in Jajpur’s Dasarathpur block.
The incident, which took place on Saturday, came to the fore after the victim’s mother Jyostnarani Das lodged a complaint with Mangalpur police in Jajpur on Sunday, alleging that her daughter was physical and mental torture by her husband and in-laws since her marriage with Jagabandhu Das of Kalyani village in 2016.
On Saturday, she was again assaulted brutally by her husband’s family, who branded her thighs, hands, stomach, back, chest, and private parts with a hot iron, causing severe burns and blisters. She was then taken to Jajpur in an auto-rickshaw and abandoned a few yards away from her parents’ house.
Her mother claimed that some villagers found Pranati lying unconscious and rushed her to Mangalpur community health centre. She was later shifted to Jajpur district headquarters hospital. Her condition is stable now, according to hospital sources.
“Mangalpur police registered a case on Sunday and transferred it to Dhamnagar police station for further investigation,” Jajpur Town SDPO Prasant Kumar Majhi was quoted as saying.
