Berhampur: An elderly woman allegedly consumed phenyl in Odisha’s Ganjam district on Sunday following a two-day dharna by her daughter-in-law in front of their house, alleging torture by her in-laws in ward no. 3 of Khandasahi.
According to sources, the woman, identified as Sushma Panda, took the step fearing public shame and was rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital when she fell unconscious. The doctors there, however, declared her brought dead.
The daughter-in-law, Tanmayee, fled from the dharna spot soon after learning about Sushma’s death.
Meanwhile, police have begun an investigation into the matter.
Notably, Sushma’s son tied the knot with Tanmayee in 2020. Ten days after his marriage, she left for her father’s house and made allegations against her husband at Mahila Police station. While the matter is sub-judice, Tanmayee suddenly came to her in-law’s house with her maternal grandmother on Saturday and sat on dharna in front alleging dowry torture, sources added.
