Cuttack: A woman and her three-year-old daughter were killed ant another person sustained critical injury in a powerful firecracker explosion at Mahajanpur village under Jagatpur area of Odisha’s Cuttack district.
According to sources, the incident took place while firecracker materials were being handled inside the house of Govinda Nayak. The force of the explosion was so powerful that it caused extensive damage to adjoining houses, leaving the neighbourhood in panic as residents rushed out into the streets for safety.
The victims have been identified as Nayak’s daughter-in-law Sudhansubala Nayak and 3-year-old granddaughter, who succumbed to their injuries, while his wife Bharati Nayak remains in critical condition and has been admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital.
Officials said the blast originated from firecracker-making activities being carried out within the premises, though a detailed forensic investigation is underway to determine the exact cause.
Jagatpur Police have registered a case and launched a probe into whether more explosive materials were stored in the house. Officials stated that strict action will be taken against those responsible, as the incident highlights the dangers of unauthorised firecracker production in residential zones.
