Bhubaneswar: A woman was arrested by Kalahandi police following a complaint filed by her third husband who alleged that she is a con woman and had cheated a few other men by marrying them deceitfully to extort money.
The woman has been identified as Elee Mahanta (32). Elee not only demanded money for walking away from a marriage but also for marrying.
While she got away easily from her first two marriages, the third time proved costly for Elee.
As per police, Elee had fake Aadhaar cards in the name of Sindhumati Munda, Mamta Jain and Mamta Agrawal, said police.
A resident of Jalda in Raghunathpali of Sundargarh district, Elee first married Kumudabandhu Patel. Unfortunately, Patel died and she remarried. In 2013, she tied the knot with Rajendra Das, but soon a separation followed and she left him after pocketing a hefty amount.
After the break-up Elee went to stay with her relatives in Sarangarh village of Chhattisgarh.
Police said it was at this time that a meditator Birbal Sharma brought a marriage proposal of one Bikash Jain in June 2020. On learning that the parents of Bikash were desperate to marry their son, Sharma demanded Rs 4 lakh from Jain family and they also agreed, said Jayadev Tarini, IIC of Madanpur Rampur police station.
Elee had introduced herself as Mamta Agarwal and also faked her parents and relatives to Jain family, said Tarini. Elee and Bikash were married off on June 28, 2020.
As Mamta, she started behaving weirdly after marriage. Suspecting her activities Bikash carried out his own investigation and found multiple Aadhaar cards and ₹30,000 in her possession.
On being confronted, Elee demanded ₹5 lakh to walk away. The Jain family lodged a complaint at Madanpur Rampur police.
Meanwhile, police are investigating all angles of Elee case. Was she planning another marriage?
