Berhampur: In a gruesome incident, an elderly woman was killed after her neighbour pierced a broken beer bottle into her body over a trivial issue at a village in Odisha’s Ganjam district, police said on Monday.
The accused, identifies as Basant Sahu, has surrendered before the police after committing the ghastly act at Tikiripada Sashan under the jurisdiction of Polasara police station on Sunday.
According to sources, Basant happens to be a neighbour of Bipra Sahu and both live with their families in the village. Their children entered into an argument while going for tuition on Sunday and subsequently the family members also had a verbal duel over the issue later in the day.
In the afternoon, Bipra’s wife Jamu (58) and her grand-daughter Santoshini were at the house when Basant barged in and attacked the woman with a broken beer bottle and pierced it into her body, inflicting grievous injuries.
Santoshini also sustained injuries as she was attacked while trying to save her grand-mother. Both were rushed to the community health centre (CHC) at Polasara where doctors declared Jamu dead. Santoshini’s condition was stated to be stable.
Basant, who had fled the scene after committing the act, later surrendered before the police.
Inspector In-Charge (IIC) of Polasara police station Jeetendra Mallick said a case has been registered and investigation into the incident is in progress.
