Berhampur: A court has sentenced a woman to rigorous imprisonment for 7 years for dowry torture and murder of her widow daughter-in-law in Odisha’s Ganjam district.
As per the case, the victim, Manaas Bisoi was married to Vinod Bisoi of Panaspalli village under Gangapur police station in the district. Soon after Vinod died but Manaas continued to stay with her in-laws.
Manaas’ in-laws demanded Rs 50,000 additional dowry after the death of Vinod. As her family could not pay the amount, her in-laws started torturing her. On April 1, 2012, the young woman was found burnt at the backyard of her in-laws’ house.
Manaas’ sister Sanjukta filed a complaint at Gangapur police station alleging murder of her sister by the in-laws due to dowry. The police had arrested Manaas’ father-in-law Panchanan Bisoi, mother-in-law Damayanti, brothers-in-law Babula and Nikunj after investigation.
After hearing the case and deposition of 14 witnesses, the additional district and sessions court at Aska in the district convicted Damayanti in the case of dowry torture and murder of Manaas and setting fire to her body.
