Woman Set Ablaze With Petrol In Odisha Over ‘Dowry’ Demand; Suffers 40% Burns

Ganjam: A woman in a half-burnt condition was admitted to Khallikote CHC and later shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur on Monday.

It is being alleged that the victim, identified as Arati, was set on fire by her mother-in-law and brother-in-law at Kahneipura village under Khallikote police limits this morning over dowry demands. She sustained 40% burns but her condition is currently reported to be stable.

According to the woman’s family, she was subjected to repeated dowry-related torture since her love marriage with Akash Parida, who works abroad, around two years ago. Following a heated argument last night, her mother-in-law and brother-in-law, identified as Prakash, allegedly poured petrol on her this morning and set her on fire.

She was rescued by some relatives and neighbours, who then rushed her to Khallikote CHC, from where she was referred to MKCG MCH.

Police have reached the hospital and have started an investigation to ascertain circumstances leading to the incident.
