Jharsuguda: A woman was allegedly set on fire by her father-in-law at Bhalupatra village under Laikera police limits in Jharsuguda district on Friday.

The deceased was identified as Rukmani Rohidas (28), a widow hailing from Sambalpur.

A written complaint in this regard has been lodged by Rukmani’s family members at Laikera police station.

According to sources, Rukmani had married to one Sukhram Rohidas, son of Banamali Rohidas, a few years back. The couple had a four-year-old son.

Following Sukhram’s death some four months ago, his father used to quarrel with Rukmani over property on several occasions.

Banamali had a verbal fight with the woman on the fateful night over the same issue. In a fit of rage, he set Rukmani afire by pouring kerosene on her.

She was rushed to the district headquarters hospital in a critical condition. In her statement before police, the victim accused her father-in-law of setting her afire.  She succumbed to the burns while undergoing treatment last night, the sources added.
