Dhenkanal: A man allegedly threw his wife and five daughters, including the 15-day-old newborn, out of their house at Muruga village in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district for being unable to bear a male child.
According to sources, Sulochana Nayak had married Chaitanya 14 years ago and they had been staying at her maternal uncle’s house there. He allegedly had been abusive and harassed her for not giving birth to a son. Matters worsened after the birth of their fifth daughter and Chaitanya asked Sulochana to leave the house with all the children on a cold winter night.
They were forced to spend the Saturday night on the veranda of Bhuban Community Health Centre (CHC). The health staff noticed the family during routine rounds and alerted human rights activists, who then coordinated with the district administration and shifted them to a Swadhar Kendra (Rehabilitation Home) in the Gandia area.
Sulochana’s mother Mohana Nayak told the media that Chaitanya was in a relationship with another woman and tortured her after she gave birth to five daughters. “I had lodged a complaint at Bhuban police station, but they have not taken any action so far. I am a widow and have no support. I want justice for my daughter and grandchildren,” she added.
