New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi has been hogging the limelight during continued protests demanding Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation over irregularities in the conduct of SIR process.
On Friday, the government sought to put the heat on the Congress leader with a counter charge.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, alleged before the Supreme Court that female police personnel were molested and injured during the Rahul-helmed Congress protest in Delhi.
“Please see visuals from two days ago. Lady police officers have been molested and injured,” Mehta told the apex court, claiming that cops were also verbally abused but acted responsibly.
The Solicitor General reminded the court that the protest was unlawful, as police had not granted permission.
Mehta made the remarks during a hearing on petitions challenging restrictions imposed in Delhi ahead of a separate protest called by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on October 10 against Gyanesh.
Earlier this week, Opposition INDIA bloc MPs were stopped by police when they were going towards Jantar Mantar to protest alleged “vote chori” and removal of the CEC.
BJP allegation against Rahul
The BJP alleged, following Wednesday’s protest, that Rahul tried to push and inappropriately touched a female police officer during a confrontation on Ashoka Road. The incident occurred when police were trying to remove a female protester from the sit-in.
BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari shared a video clip on X and accused Rahul of attempting to push the officer, while another party spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia sought an apology.
There was no response from the Congress to those allegations.
Rahul, his sister and fellow-Lok Sabha MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several other INDIA bloc leaders were forcibly removed and detained after police stopped their buses from proceeding towards Jantar Mantar. The Opposition leaders were wanting to meet the Election Commissioners.
President Droupadi Murmu is scheduled to meet INDIA bloc leaders at 8 pm on Friday.
