Ghaziabad: It’s Devi Paksha and in a show of women power, an all-women team of Ghaziabad Police carried out an encounter with a notorious criminal and injured him in the leg before taking him into custody.
Officials have claimed that this is the first instance of an all-women team carrying out an encounter by themselves.
The incident took place near Lohia Nagar in Ghaziabad when the police team was carrying out a routine check on vehicles.
Jitendra Kumar (22), who has eight cases of snatching, loot, theft and other crimes against him at the Vijay Nagar police station, approached the barrier and was asked to stop by the policewomen.
“The criminal attempted to flee by taking a U-turn close to the barrier but his scooter skidded and he fell to the ground. He got up and fired a round at the police team that comprised three sub-inspectors and two constables. The policewomen were forced to return fire. Two shots were fired by them. One of these hit Kumar in the leg and he was immediately captured,” Upasana Pandey, ACP, Sihani Gate Circle, said.
The history-sheeter was taken to a hospital where he received treatment before being arrested. A country-made pistol and other items were seized from his possession.
Senior officials have commended the way the police team went about their task, pointing to the fact that women are in no way inferior to their male counterparts, even in risk-prone professions.
“This is the first instance in Ghaziabad where an all-women team was engaged in an encounter and successfully managed to overpower and arrest the suspect,” Pandey said.
The Uttar Pradesh Police has cracked down on crime ahead of the festive season. On September 20, the Ghaziabad police shot dead Balram Singh, a gangster of the Anil Dujana gang, in an encounter.
On September 17, gangsters Ravinder of Rohtak and Arun of Sonepat — both linked to the Rohit Godara-Goldy Brar gang — were gunned down in a shootout in Ghaziabad’s Tronica City. The encounter was carried out by a joint team of special task forces of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, and also the special cell of the Delhi Police.
