Women Run Over By Speeding Vehicle Driven By Cop, One Dead
Jalandhar: Two young women were waiting to cross the road here in Punjab on Monday morning when they spotted a car coming their way at high speed. They stepped back but were too late, as the car had hit them, leaving one of them dead and the other critically injured. The driver, a police inspector, has been arrested.
The chilling CCTV footage of the hit-and-run shows the women standing on the road divider, about to cross and a white Maruti Brezza speeding towards them. The footage shows the car, driven allegedly by inspector Amrit Pal Singh, careening into them and disappearing without breaking speed. The incident took place around 8.30 am on a road in the Jalandhar Cantonment area.
Navjot Kaur, who worked in a car showroom, died on the spot. The other woman is in hospital with serious wounds.
Soon after the incident, a large crowd gathered at the spot by the Jalandhar-Phagwara highway and blocked traffic.
Local residents said they would not clear the highway unless Amrit Pal Singh was charged with murder. The protest disrupted traffic in parts of the city.
