Sonepur: Hundreds of women staged a mass demonstration at Ramapur in Dunguripali block of Odisha’s Sonepur district on Saturday demanding a complete ban on alcohol sales in the area.
Angered by the continued availability of both country made and foreign liquor, the women marched through the streets of Ramapur, visiting homes and shops where alcohol was being sold to raise awareness and press for immediate action.
During the rally, the protestors also went to the local police station, urging authorities to take strict measures against illegal liquor sellers.
The protestors repeatedly warned residents and shopkeepers about the harmful effects of alcohol consumption and insisted that sale must be halted immediately without delay. Expressing frustration over the lack of enforcement, one protestor said, “Why are the police doing nothing about those who are consuming it? If they are unable to act, we will go directly to the Sonepur collector’s office and demand a stop to the illegal alcohol trade.”
Despite repeated complaints in the past, locals allege that alcohol continues to be openly sold in Ramapur, prompting this huge demonstration of women. Authorities have been urged to take immediate steps to curb liquor sales and enforce existing regulations. The women have vowed to continue their campaign until effective action is taken and their demands are addressed.
