Bhubaneswar: In a tragic incident, a labourer was killed after a wall collapsed in the circulating area of Kantabanji Railway Station in Odisha’s Balangir district on Thursday.
According to East Coast Railway (ECoR), the wall collapsed during debris clearance work being carried out by a private contractor using a JCB machine.
The collapse resulted in the demise of a contract labourer, identified as Umesh Rishidev, aged about 56 years, it said in a statement.
Prompt rescue operations were carried out and an inquiry has been initiated to determine the cause of the incident. Preventive measures are being reinforced to ensure such incidents do not recur in the future.
The contractor responsible for the work has been directed to provide necessary ex-gratia and financial support to the next of kin of the deceased, in line with contractual obligations and welfare provisions.
Stating that ECoR is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all outsourced workers engaged in its projects, it said a thorough review of safety protocols and on-ground practices are being undertaken to ensure the same at all work sites.
