Chennai: After sitting out Team India’s World Cup opener against Australia on Sunday, Shubman Gill will miss the second match as well.
The men in blue, who beat Australia by 6 wickets at Chennai, will face Afghanistan in Delhi on Wednesday.
The absence of Gill, who is recovering from dengue, is a big blow to Team India as he has been in exceptional form. The stylish right-handed opener is the leading run-getter in ODIs this year with a tally of 1230 at a staggering average of 72.35 and impressive strike rate of 105.03. He scored two centuries and a half-century in his last four ODIs.
Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah said in a statement that Gill won’t be travelling with the team to Delhi and will stay back in Chennai and be under the supervision of the medical team.
The big match against Pakistan is scheduled to be played on October 14 at Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera, Ahmedabad.
The team management will be keeping fingers crossed that Gill recovers in time for the marquee clash with Pakistan. A month ago, Gill scored 58 in the Asia Cup Super 4 fixture against Pakistan.
In Gill’s absence, Ishan Kishan opened the innings against Australia and was out attempting an expansive drive off Mitchell Starc only to be caught at slip by Cameron Green.
