London: Virat Kohli’s Team India will play for a fat prize purse of $1.6 million when they clash with New Zealand in the final of the inaugural World Test Championship (WTC).
The WTC title decider will be played at Southampton’s Rose Bowl Stadium from June 18-22.
“The winners of the much-awaited ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final between India and New Zealand will take home a purse of $1.6 million along with the ICC Test Championship Mace,” International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Monday.
The runner-up team will receive $800,000.
The nine-team championship was played over a two-year cycle, with the other competitors being Australia, England, South Africa, Pakistan, the West Indies, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
Every team played six series, and India qualified for the final by topping the points table while New Zealand finished second.
“The Test Mace, previously given to teams topping the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s Test Team Rankings, will now be given to the WTC winners. In case the final ends in a draw or tie, the finalists will split the prize money for first and second places and share possession of the Mace during the time they remain champions,” the ICC added.
