World Water Day: Conserve Water With These Small Acts, Save Earth
Bhubaneswar: Water is life. Every living organism on this planet needs water for survival. As we all know 60 per cent of our body is water. Yet, we knowingly or unknowingly keep wasting water in our everyday lives. Have you ever really thought why water is depleting?
Careless usage, pollution of waterbodies and no adequate measures at a larger level to replenish the groundwater are some of the reasons behind the earth’s depleting water levels.
While urban lifestyle provides easy access to enough clean drinking water, there are millions across the universe who spend days and walk miles looking for water. Lack of judicious usage by humans has led to shortage of the natural resource.
On World Water Day, celebrated on March 22 every year since 1993, activists focus on conservation of water and the importance of freshwater. This year, the Day is being celebrated with the theme “Groundwater, making the invisible visible”.
According to the reports of WWF, around 1.1 billion people across the world lack access to water, and a total of 2.7 billion people face water scarcity for at least one month of the year.
If we keep doing what we are doing today, there will be no water by 2050. However, we can make a huge difference for the planet if we all do our part in conserving water. In our day-to-day life, we can conserve water in several ways such as:
Close the tap while brushing our teeth: We teach our children these as part of good habits lesson but forget ourselves. We can always save a litre of water if we close the tap while brushing.
Check toilet for leaks: Put a few drops of food colouring in the cistern tank and if without flushing, the colouring begins to appear in the toilet then there’s a leak that wastes more than 100 gallons of water.
Take showers: Prefer showers instead of using bucket and mug for bathing saves a lot of water in day to day lives.
Check faucets and pipes: Even the small drops of water which keeps dripping wastes around 50 gallons of water in a day.
Switch from top-load washing machine to front-load: It can save a minimum of 60 litres per wash.
Reuse water: Position the pipe and sprinklers in the garden/lawn so all the used water can automatically water the garden/lawn.
Reuse rainwater: During the rainy season, save the rain water in several containers and can use later for washing and watering plants.
Close the tap while rinsing utensils, clothes, vegetables and fruits: It saves gallons of water while rinsing the utensils.
Let’s keep conserving water together, and save the planet for our future. If we try our best, someone somewhere will get enough water to lead a basic life.
