New Delhi: In another show of their personal camaraderie, irrespective of the bilateral tensions created by Donald Trump’s tariff war, the US President sent Prime Minister Narendra Modi a special gift through US Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor.
Gor, who met Modi in New Delhi on Saturday, handed over a signed photograph of the PM with Trump at the White House, on which the President has written, “Mr Prime Minister, you are great.”
Modi and Gor discussed bilateral issues including defence, trade and technology.
“Glad to receive Mr Sergio Gor, Ambassador-designate of the US to India. I’m confident that his tenure will further strengthen the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership,” Modi wrote on X and shared a picture with the envoy.
Gor said after the meeting that “President Trump considers PM Modi a great and personal friend.”
“It’s an honour and a privilege to be here today. We just finished an incredible meeting with Prime Minister Modi, where we discussed bilateral issues, including defence, trade, and technology. We also discussed the importance of critical minerals and the importance of them to both of our nations. The US values its relationship with India, and under the strong leadership of President Donald J Trump and Prime Minister Modi, I’m optimistic about the days ahead for both of our nations,” Gor told reporters.
Before meeting Modi, the 38-year-old Gor called on External Affairs minister S Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.
The envoy, a close aide of Trump, is on a six-day visit to India after the US Senate confirmed his appointment as the American Ambassador to India. Gor is accompanied by Deputy Secretary for Management and Resources Michael J Rigas.
Gor, a 38-year-old close aide to Trump and a key figure in the MAGA campaign, has also been appointed as Trump’s special envoy for South and Central Asia.
