Young Artist Of Puri Makes Miniature Model Of Hockey Stick With Matchsticks On National Sports Day

Puri: As a mark of honour for men’s hockey team of India, which created history in the Tokyo Olympics by winning a medal after 41 years, a young artist of Puri town has created a miniature model of hockey stick with matchsticks.

Artist Saswat Ranjan Sahoo displayed his creation to the media on the occasion of National Sports Day on Sunday. The model measures 15 inches in length and 5 inches in width.

Sahoo said he had used 690 matchsticks for making the model and it took him two days of meticulous work to come up with the product.

“On the occasion of National Sports Day, I made a craftwork of hockey stick. It has also the gears of different sports like boxing, badminton, weight-lifting, golf, cricket and javelin in miniature form. The entire model is made of matchsticks,” said 18-year-old Saswat who belongs to Kumbharapada in Puri.

The National Sports Day is celebrated in the country on August 29, the birth anniversary of legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand who was instrumental in winning gold medal in Olympics for India in 1928, 1932 and 1936.
