Thiruvananthapuram: A 23-year-old youth has been arrested in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram for allegedly bludgeoning to death four members of his family and a friend. The youth has been identified as Afan, who used to live abroad with his father. He returned to India recently.
Afan allegedly walked into the local Venjaramoodu police station and confessed of killing six persons. He then attempted to commit suicide but was prevented from doing so. The young man had also attacked his mother and had thought her to be dead. The woman survived though and is now in hospital, the police said.
“It seems that there was a dispute regarding a woman friend living in their house for the last few days. Afan also spoke of some financial issues. On Monday, he first went to Pangode, where he killed his paternal grandmother Salman Beevi. After that he went to S N Puram, where he killed his uncle Latheef, and his aunt Shaheeda. He then returned home and attacked his 13-year-old brother and the woman friend. Both of them were killed. He also attacked his mother but she survived the attack,” a senior police officer said.
The officer said that the accused will be questioned further when he is released from hospital. Afan was admitted to hospital after he consumed poison in a bid to kill himself. His father Raheem, who lives and works in West Asia, has been informed of the incident.
