Berhampur: A youth sustained critical burn injuries as he attempted to kill himself by self-immolation in Odisha’s Ganjam district on Tuesday.
According to sources, the youth, identified as Punia Gouda of Borada village under Badagada police station in the district, poured petrol on himself and set fire inside his house. His family members with the help of the villagers rushed to his rescue and managed to douse the fire.
Though they called the ambulance over phone, it did not arrive in the village. The villagers arranged a vehicle and took him to the community health centre (CHC) at Badagada.
After preliminary treatment, the doctors of the CHC said Punia’s condition was critical as he had sustained 70% burn injuries. On their advice, the family admitted him in MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur.
On being informed, a team from Badagada police station went to Punia’s house and started investigation. They have registered a case. But why Punia took the extreme step has not been confirmed.
