New Delhi: Eleven students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), including former JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh, have been booked for allegedly breaching prohibitory orders due to VIP movement while protesting outside Odisha Bhawan here last week.
The demonstration was organised by the student outfit All India Students’ Association (AISA), seeking justice for a 20-year-old student in Odisha who died by self-immolation due to alleged sexual harassment by her HoD and institutional neglect.
An FIR was registered under Sections 223(a) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for disobedience since the gathering exceeded five persons, violating Section 163 of Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) which was in effect in the area, The Tribune reported.
The report further stated that the students were informed about the prohibitory orders and were directed to protest at Jantar Mantar. However, around 3 pm, a group of 50 to 60 students gathered near Samrat Hotel in Chanakyapuri with banners and posters, raising slogans loudly. Despite police warnings, the students acted aggressively and attempted to continue the protest forcibly. They were detained with “appropriate force” and taken to Mandir Marg police station, the report added, quoting the FIR.
The protest was held during the 12-hour Odisha bandh called by opposition Congress and Left parties on July 17.
According to an Instagram post by AISAJNU, the students were demanding an end to the BJP-RSS nexus of protecting perpetrators and resignation of Odisha CM Mohan Majhi and Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj.
