Bhubaneswar: At least 14 passengers were injured, two critically, when the state-run ‘Ama Bus’ crashed into a stationary tanker near Odisha’s Tangi on Tuesday morning.

According to sources, the accident took place when the bus, part of the urban transport network, was traveling from Baramunda towards Tangi on National Highway 16 and the driver failed to avoid the tanker parked on the roadside. The dumper and windshield of the bus, which eyewitnesses claim exceeded its 40 kmph speed limit, were damaged in the accident. Several passenger-side windows were also shattered, causing injuries from broken glass.

Police along with locals rescued the injured, who were then taken to Tangi Community Health Centre and nearby private hospitals for treatment. Two passengers with serious injuries were later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.

However, the CRUT, which runs the bus service, said the bus was travelling at a speed of 38 kmph, and no major mechanical fault was detected during inspection. It attributed the accident to the captain’s fatigue due to inadequate rest, leading to drowsy driving.  “A depot-level committee has been instructed to carry out a detailed enquiry into the incident. To prevent such incidents in the future, depot managers have been directed to ensure strict adherence to prescribed working hours,” it further stated.

The CRUT further informed that most commuters with minor injuries have already been discharged. “…three individuals remain under care. The captain and guide are also undergoing treatment in the hospital.,” it said, adding that emergency response teams, including ambulances and PCR units, reached the site immediately.
