15 Persons Of A Village Hospitalised For Diarrhoea In Odisha’s Cuttack District

Cuttack: At least 15 persons of a village were hospitalised reportedly due to diarrhoea in the last two days in Odisha’s Cuttack district.

According to sources, the residents of Mundia Sahi of Bishnupur village under Tigiria police limits in the district have been complaining of vomiting and loose motions for the two days. While some of them are undergoing treatment in their houses, around 15 villagers have been admitted to sub-divisional hospital at Athagarh and the Community Health Centre (CHC) at Tigiria.

Two patients undergoing treatment in Athagarh hospital have been shifted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack as their conditions deteriorated.

Admitting that 10 patients were under treatment for diarrhoea at present, Dr Manas Kumar Pani of Athagrah Sub-Divisional hospital said, “Five persons were admitted on January 4 and five more on the following day. Their condition has improved following treatment.”

A team of officials from the Health Department visited Bishnupur to take stock of the situation. They collected sample from the village well and sent it for test. They suspected that the contaminated water of the well was responsible for outbreak of diarrhoea.

The Health officials treated the well with bleaching powder and advised the villagers not to use its water. They also carried out awareness campaign among villagers on preventive measures against the water-borne disease.

It may be noted that diarrhoea reportedly claimed 13 lives in Rourkela of Sundargarh district in December last year. Nearly 1,400 people were afflicted with the disease in almost all 40 Wards of the city and its adjoining areas in the outbreak which was reported from December 11.
