17-Year-Old Girl Flogged In Public In Gujarat For Allegedly Eloping, 3 Booked

Ahmedabad: A video of a 17-year-old girl being publicly flogged in a Gujarat village went viral, following which three people were booked.

According to police, the minor’s relatives flogged her with sticks on May 21 in Chhota Udepur district as she had eloped with a man. Six days later, the video surfaced on social media. Police identified the accused and booked them, though they are yet to arrest anyone.

“The video is of an incident that occurred a few days ago where a 17-year-old girl was publicly flogged by her relatives for eloping with a man of the same village. The older man seen in the video has been identified as the girl’s uncle. We are lodging an FIR against three persons who are seen assaulting the minor in the video while the roles of rest of the people are being probed. Currently, sections of rioting are going to be imposed on them,” Chhota Udepur Superintendent of Police MS Bhabhor said.

Three men are seen abusing, flogging, assaulting and stripping the girl in the presence of several onlookers.

“After the video came up, we identified the victim and asked her to file a complaint which she did. The FIR is being lodged and no arrests have been made yet,” The Indian Express quoted a police officer as saying.
