1st Time In Odisha: Gum Grafting Performed On Woman In Cuttack’s SCB Hospital
Cuttack: The doctors of SCB Medical College and Hospital in Odisha’s Cuttack city have successfully performed gum grafting of a woman. This is claimed to first such operation in the state.
The woman had tested positive for COVID in May and undergone treatment. A month after recovering from the disease, she was infected with black fungus and her upper jaw was removed. As a result, she was unable to take food and speak properly. Her facial structure had also changed.
After she was admitted in SCB Hospital, a team of four doctors led by Dr Bibhuti Nayak performed the surgery and the gum was grafted successfully. The complex surgery continued for over seven hours. The second phase of the surgery for fixing the teeth in the gum will be conducted after three months.
“We have done maxillary reconstruction earlier. But she was the first patient to undergo the restoration at SCB after suffering from blank fungus. It was a very complex surgery,” said Dr Nayak. The patient, who is now able to take food, will be totally normal after the second surgery, he added.
