Berhampur: Ganjam district reported its maiden coronavirus case on May 2 when two Surat-returned youths tested positive for the virus. Since then, the number has spiralled to 210 with new cases being reported almost every single day. And most of the patients are Surat returnees and in quarantine centres.
On Tuesday, the district saw 53 people testing positive for the virus. This is the highest single-day spike in corona cases in Ganjam. The details of the patient are awaited.
As many as 21 were found to have contracted the virus on Monday. They are all Surat returnees.

One among these patients had travel history to Kerala.
The district also saw one death on May 10.

The return of migrants has spelled trouble for the district, which had successfully kept the virus at bay with stringent measures in place.

According to official sources, around 3 lakh migrants have registered to return to Ganjam. There could be thousands of unregistered migrants who might be on their way back. The Odisha government has already deputed three IAS officers and five OAS officers to assist the district administration in COVID-19 management.
