New Delhi: The Indian government has expressed sorrow over death of a 24-year-old, who was tragically shot dead inside a car in Canada’s South Vancouver.
“It has learnt with great sorrow the shooting and killing of an Indian national, Mr Chirag Antil, living in Vancouver,” India’s Consulate in Vancouver posted on X on Saturday evening.
It has approached the concerned Canadian authorities for more information in this regard.
According to Vancouver Police, Chirag was found dead inside a vehicle after people in the vicinity of East 55th Avenue and Main Street reported hearing gunshots around 11 pm on April 12. “No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing,” the police added.
Chirag’s brother Ronit told reporters that he seemed happy when they spoke on the phone in morning. He was shot dead while travelling somewhere in his Audi. His family is raising money through the crowdfunding platform GoFundMe to repatriate his body to India, local media reported.
“Chirag Antil, an international student from Haryana, India, who arrived in Vancouver in 2022 for his studies, tragically lost his life due to a recent murder in the city. We urgently need assistance to raise funds for sending his body back to India,” the appeal stated.
He had pursued an MBA course at the private University of Canada West and was on a work permit after completing it.
While drawing attention to the murder, National Students’ Union of India or NSUI’s national president Varun Choudhary also appeal for support from the Ministry of external affairs for Chirag’s family. “We urge the Ministry of External Affairs to closely monitor the progress of the investigation and ensure that justice is swiftly served. Additionally, we request the Ministry to extend all necessary support and assistance to the family of the deceased during this difficult time,” he posted on X.
