New Jersey: A 24-year-old Indian woman, identified as Simran, has gone missing under mysterious circumstances in New Jersey, just days after arriving in the United States for an arranged marriage. The incident has triggered widespread concern, with local authorities initiating a full-scale search operation.
Simran landed in the US on June 20 and was reported missing on June 26 in Lindenwold, Camden County, where she had been residing temporarily. Police said she was last seen near the area of The Vue apartments on the White Horse Pike, calmly using her mobile phone and showing no signs of distress. Surveillance footage captured her walking alone, dressed in grey sweatpants, a white T-shirt, black flip-flops, and diamond-studded earrings, reported the TOI. Authorities described her as being around 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighing approximately 150 pounds, with a small scar on her left forehead.
What has alarmed investigators is that Simran has no known relatives in the U.S. and does not speak English. Her only phone reportedly functioned only via Wi-Fi, making contact and tracing difficult. The purpose of her visit was said to be her marriage to a man in the U.S., arranged by her family. However, police are now looking into whether there was more to the nature of her travel and if foul play or a broader fraud scheme could be involved. The arranged marriage is also being probed as a possible motive or facade for her movement into the country.
Detective Joe Tomasetti of the Lindenwold Police Department is leading the investigation. He confirmed that authorities are treating the case as suspicious and have not ruled out any possibilities, including trafficking or coercion. Efforts are also underway to contact her family in India and understand more about her background and the person she was supposed to marry.
Local residents and Indian-American community members have expressed concern over her disappearance, urging the public to come forward with any information. Anyone with tips or details relevant to the case has been asked to contact the Lindenwold Police Department.
